Day 6 - Puerto Escondido

Written on: Thursday March 23rd, 2006

A journal entry from: Mexico 2006

Today is our last day in Puerto Escondido, tomorrow we leave for Playa del Carmen.

Im still fighting the remainder of my cold, a slightly runny nose and an annoying cough, but Im getting much better.

This morning, we had breakfast at the apartment then came to the internet cafe to finalise our hotel accomodation bookings. We are now set for the remainder of the trip. It takes a bit of the stress off our back and we can now focus the remainder of our trip on relaxing and enjoying the sites of Mexico. Im not on vacation from work just to spend all my time back on a computer!

In the afternoon, we went back to relax at the Carrizalillo beach with its 168 steps. We rented a palapa for the afternoon for 50 pesos to keep out of the sun. We brought our snorkelling gear with us and snorkelled for a while but we did not see much. Kevin did find some old pottery and saw a bright blue fish. I saw shells and sand. Ha!

At the end of the day, we rented a boogie board (for me) and a surf board (for kevin) to try out the waves. There is a slight tide and the waves get bigger near 4 PM. The rental cost is 110 pesos for one hour; 80 for the surf board and 30 for the boogie board. It was my first experience with the large waves and I had a great time. I was a little hesitant at first since the water is not deep near the break and there are huge rocks below. In the hour, I did manage to catch the waves and ride them a few times. I would give up skiing for this anytime but they need to install a rope tow instead of having to paddle all the time. Carrizalillo beach is a great place to learn since the waves are gentle enough for beginners.

In the evening, we watched the sunset on top of our apartment building while drinking margaritas. What beautfil colors! We are nearing the rainy season and there are more clouds in the sky now. They were lit up with reds, yellows, and oranges.

For supper, we went back to the Adoquin and ate at Los Crotos on Playa Principal. I ordered the Gigantes Lagostina (Giant Shrimp) and Kevin got the steak. Our meals were wonderful as was the service from Mark Anthonio. I had a little kitten begging by my leg all night so I gave him a bit of Kevins steak. Ive never seen a cat eat so fast, and I have 2 fat cats at home.

Tomorrow we fly at 3:05 to Mexico City then we transfer to another flight to Cancun where we arrive at 7:45 PM. There are hourly buses from Cancun to Playa Del Carmen that we will take for 300 pesos.
