Exploring Nagoya

Written on: Sunday November 26th, 2006

A journal entry from: Japan

After a night in the hotel, I was met by another Nova employee who led me on to the next leg of my journey to Nagoya, the city in which I would be working (note the alliteration). I was on my own at this point, as the other teachers were all headed to different cities around the country. After a two hour train ride to Nagoya, I was met by another employee, Wei, an Australian, who took me to my apartment. The place is about a 10 minute subway ride out of downtown, in an area called Gokiso (named after the station name...everything revolves around the train system here). It's a three-bedroom aparment in a building called "Maison Soleil", which, for those of you who remember high school, is a French term meaning "House of the Sun"...thereare also "Plage de Nord" and "Casa Bella" not far away. Soon after moving in, I met one of my new roomates, Cody, an American from Columbus, Ohio. He has been here since August. After getting some of my stuff unpacked, we went out to a bar called Strikers for a drink. The next dayI set out to explore the city. It's not quite as exciting as Tokyo, but it's still pretty cool. I took a few pictures which are included in the accompanying album. Among the more notable sights....the TV tower in the middle of downtown (which I hear is really cool at night), Central Park, and the Pokemon store. I was also fascinated by this strange type of motorcycle they have here...looks something like a cross between a motorbike and a snowmobile, hence the nick-name I have now given them: snoterbikes. Have a look at the pictures and judge for yourself.
