Winter Vacation Part 5: Monkeys...Everyone Loves Monkeys

Written on: Sunday February 11th, 2007

A journal entry from: Japan

Just outside of Nagano city (a 40 minute bus ride followed by a 40 minute forest hike) is a famous place called Jigokudani Yaen-kooen. It combines two very popular attractions in Japan, namely, mokeys and onsens (natural mineral hotsprings). This particular onsen site is home to a large population of snow monkeys, and, for some reason or another they have decided to do as humans do and bathe in them, the only place in the world where such activity takes place. Although a bit gimmicky at times (note the "snow monkey web cam" in the photos section), it was a really cool sight to see and an opportunity for some great photos. Have a look.
