Phnom Penh Round 3

Written on: Thursday November 3rd, 2011

A journal entry from: South East Asia

My mom arrived from Canada and we spent a whirlwind 2 1/2 days in Phnom Penh.  Our first night we just went for a nice dinner and wine.  The next day Mom and I spent the day shopping.  We started at Central Market and met Avril for an amazing lunch at Romdeng - a restaurant that trains former street kids in the hospitality industry.  In the afternoon we hit Russian Market for a sweaty (but awesome) shopping experience and then cooled off in the hotel pool.  Our last day in Phnom Penh Mom and I went to the killing fields and to S-21.  It was a very sobering experience; such recent and terrible history which I didn't know much about until I came to Cambodia.  To lighten the mood of the day we went for dinner at Friends - another restaurant run by the same NGO as Romdeng which also trains former street kids in the hospitality industry then went to Blue Chilli - the only gay bar in Phnom Penh for a drag show and cocktails.
