Monkey Island (Koh Rong)

A journal entry from: South East Asia

For my last night in Sihanoukville I met up with Avril and her friends Maeve and Jeff.  The next morning we got up and went to Monkey Island (there's no monkeys on the island, BTW!).  The weather on the island was better than Sihanoukville, but unfortunately still rather wet.  It was a good excuse to just chill out, read and play cards.  We drank the bar out of white wine over the first two nights :)  The weather cleared up enough during the day that we were able to go to the beach once, which was nice!  Avril and I went into the village one afternoon and had a coconut and just watched the local children.  They were jumping off the pier into the water, which wouldn't have been very deep.  They then started belly flopping off the pier into the water and one of their mothers came running down to the beach with a big stick shouting at them to stop.  When they didn't listen she chased after them giving them spankings.  It was like something out of a film - the kids were holding their bottoms and running for their lives.  Absolutely hilarious!  I also got offered a job for Phnom Penh whilst on Monkey Island.  A friend of Avril's who is a teacher at an international school was there as well and we got to chatting.  I was asking her about volunteering and she was saying they didn't take volunteers but that I could have a job as they needed a kindergarden teacher!  So I will be teaching kindergarden in Phnom Penh for 3 weeks or until they find someone permanent - whichever comes first.  I think probably the 3 weeks as she was saying they hadn't had an appropriate CV come in since July - yay!
