Kyoto: Kinkaku-Ji Golden Temple

Written on: Friday August 1st, 2008

A journal entry from: Kyoto Prefecture

This is a wonderful building to see with its gold leaf covered walls nestle beside the pond and amongst the gardens.

It was built in 1397 as a retirement villa for the ruling shogun and eventually changed into a Zen temple. However, the original structure no longer remains due to a number of fires over the years. This newer version included gold leafing on both upper areas instead of the original which has less. This has been designated as a World Heritage Site and is a popular tourist location.

There is not a lot of variety in my pictures because of camera difficulties and I can't quite remember which of the general pictures (trees, flowers) were also from this location.
