Kyoto: General Information

Written on: Friday August 1st, 2008

A journal entry from: Kyoto Prefecture

A former capital of Japan and a pretty big city (population almost 1.5 million) with lots of traditional influence.

Because it was the capital prior to the Edo period (and also before the modern area) there are a number of large shrines and temples scattered through out the city and outlying areas. It also holds 17 Unesco World Heritage sites along with ample opportunities to experience traditional arts (e.g. kabuki), food, architecture...etc..

It is now a very popular tourist destination and only an hour or so from Osaka by train.
