Wakayama City: Castle

Written on: Monday September 28th, 2009

A journal entry from: Wakayama Prefecture

It is referred to as one of three flatland castles of Japan. However, is situated at the top of a good sized hill. This is a wonderful spot to spend an afternoon walking around. Complete with a quaint garden and unique due to its zoo. (First castle I have been to that has a mixture of animals.)

It has a long history dating back to the 1500's. With attacks, flooding and as a target during WW2 the original buildings and materials no longer exist. However, in 1958 it was rebuilt using the design from the early 17th century using concrete.

The Okaguchi gate located at the entrance has been declared a Important Cultural Properties.

There is also Nishi-no-Maru Garden which was built in the 17th century. Small but quite beautiful with Japanese evergreens and small pond.
