Iga: Castle

Written on: Sunday April 25th, 2010

A journal entry from: Mie Prefecture

The castle was originally part of the smaller city of Ueno so it is often referred to as Iga Ueno Castle.

Its present castle with a wooden tenshu was actually built in the 1930s however the initial castle was begun in 1585.

The design of the castle was created during a time of peace so the architect was able to focus on the ascetic as well as the practical. And this can be demonstrated by the 30 meter walls which are the tallest in Japan.

It has been declared a National Historic Site and houses a museum about the Iga area.
