Jalpaiguri Wildlife Sanctuary... RHINOS!

Written on: Wednesday May 20th, 2009

A journal entry from: In the spiced Indian air....

We finally made it to Jalpaiguri Wildlife Sanctuary 3 days late and still feeling a bit off.  We spent one day here where we toured the park on a jeep safari as well as on top of an elephant.

The scenery was of course breathtaking, the forest was thick, and there were tigers, one horned rhinos, deer, and a million species of birds present. This park actually holds some sort of record for the most species of birds in one place.

I liked the jeep safari and we did see a rhino from afar when we were at the top of a viewing tower.  Being on the elephant was really cool since we lumbered right through the dense forest and got right up close and personal with a rhino and a deer.  I had been on an elephant once before in Thailand and was hoping they would treat the elephants better here in India but they didn't seem to. I don't think I will ride an elephant again for that reason. Unfortunately we didn't see any tigers which is to be expected given that there are so few now.

Next stop is Darjeeling which I have been looking forward to for weeks. The weather there is around 15 at night at 20-25 during the day. Perfect!
