Singapore Stopover

Written on: Saturday February 2nd, 2008

A journal entry from: The trip of a lifetime

We arrived at Singapore at about 5pm and headed out into the warm, muggy air. It was nice to be warm again and to see brightly coloured flowers again!

We stayed at the Park Royal (we thought we would treat ourselves since it was the last leg of the tour) and really appreciated the air con when we checked in.

We headed off for a wander along the tropical streets of Singapore and ended up in Suntec City, a huge shopping mall just three blocks away from our hotel. We wandered around in there and got some dinner, didn't do too much shopping because we reckon the prices are pretty similar to home.

We headed back to our hotel and managed to get to sleep at a reasonable time but both woke up in the middle of the night and couldn't get back to sleep. Ah the joys of jet lag. So we ordered room service and watched TV (including a really old version of Home and Away) until we finally managed to get back to sleep.

When we finally woke up the next day it was about 1pm so we slowly got ourselves ready to go out for a while even though we could have just kept on sleeping.

We wandered around some of the streets and malls around our hotel and the only t hing we bought was an umbrella to protect ourselves from the torrential rain.

The only really touristy thing we ended up doing was a riverboat ride which was really cool. It took us up and down the river and we saw some of the cool, brightly coloured riverside shopping areas, as well as the mythical Merlion statue and construction on the huge casino that they are building - I've never seen so many cranes in one place in my life.

We ended up back at Suntec City for dinner and watched the Fountain of Wealth show. This is the largest fountain in the world and they project images onto the fountain spray which is pretty cool.

Then back to the hotel for another pretty sleepless night before Stephen left for the airport at 6:15am (yes, our travel agent mucked us around and we flew home on separate flights) while I got a bit more of a sleepin, checked out of the hotel, did some real shopping, then headed out to the airport. I decided to get a foot massage while I was there since my poor feet have taken such a beating over the last few months.

I'm about to go board my flight now so probably by the time most of you read this we will be home (Steve gets in at 8:30 and I get in at 10:40 on Sunday morning). We still have a couple of blogs to put up from Europe and lots of photos to post so stay tuned.

We are really excited about coming home and feel that we have done so much and seen so much but there really is no place like home. Hope to catch up with as many of you as possible soon
