Salar Uyuni - a big whopping white place

A journal entry from: Trails in 2008

Did a 3 day jeep tour from Uyuni to Northern Chile, through some truly mind boggling scenery.  Itīs basically the remains of a lake that dried up gazillions of years ago and has left behind a large flat area of salt (bring your sunnies), amazing coloured lakes, and being a thermal area there are some cool hot springs and geysers too.  This is around 3,500 metres high so you get sunburnt before you know whatīs happened - its really hot during the day and freezing at night.  The best fun was taking loads of photos playing with perspective on the salt plains.  The scenery was amazing, but the photos can speak for themselves.

We had heard so many bad stories about this section of the trip... jeeps breaking down, drivers getting drunk, food poisoning, young testosterone-filled drivers who love nothing more than to race through this open stretch of land.  Whats more, no jeeps will have seatbelts, which was a little concerning as we drove by burnt out jeep wrecks.  I was always happy in the back seat, figuring whoever is in shotgun spot would be the first to go...
