Braga and Citania de Briteiros iron age town

Written on: Monday October 22nd, 2012

A journal entry from: November 2011 until...

I have seen plenty of extravagent churches etc. on this trip that have left me scratching my head as to where the money for them came from and where better it might have been spent. Pretty though.

I have not however been inundated with Portugese Iron Age Celtic towns, so the one at Citania de Briteiros was a treat. Spread out over a large area (24 hectares apparently) it was easy to see why the town was built where it was - natural spring water, a high position overlooking an important river (the Ave). Backyards weren't big in Iron Age towns apparently, but round houses were.
