The dangers of hitchhiking in Georgia

Written on: Monday August 6th, 2012

A journal entry from: November 2011 until...

Returned to Georgia for the final time and got to experience the dangers of hitchhiking here first hand.

After visiting the cave monasteries at Vardzia I got picked up by a van load of people from Tbilisi who explained that they were only going 5km down the road. I said that that would be fine. It turned out the 5km down the road was where someone's grandparents lived and I was invited to pop in briefly for a bite to eat. That turned into many hours and many courses of delicious food and chat (mainly in sign language) and also a visit the next morning to a nearby thermal spring bath and another huge meal for lunch before they brought me to a local town where there was a minibus to the next city. Whew!

Vardzia itself was worth seeing - the 11th century murals in the chapel were the highlight for me. The whole place had been carved from the side of the cliff.
