Tatev, Goris and Zortas Karer

Written on: Friday August 3rd, 2012

A journal entry from: November 2011 until...

The area around the southern town of Goris is famous for the Tatev monastery, perched high on a cliff overlooking a huge gorge; the abandoned cave-city on the edge of the town itself and my favourite, Vortas Karer, the ancient standing stones, so reminiscent (although predating by thousands of years) of henges in England and Scotland. Some people believe that the holes in many of the rocks are evidence that it is an ancient (7000 year old) astronomical observatory, but I tend to agree with the theory that the holes look like they were added to the stones years after tehy were originally placed as burial markers or similar.

There was a small souvenir stand near the stones. The four lads working there invited me in, gave me coffee, chatted for an hour or so and gave me a postcard as a gift... I probably would have bought something but they insisted I keep my wallet in my pocket!
