A journal entry from: November 2011 until...
I went up to Minamisanriku for a few days to check OGA for Aid's programs there. The devastation in Minamisanriku and the surrounds was horrific of course. I wasn't going to post about being up in Tohoku yet as I will go there again soon, but on the way back...
After wandering around Sendai (which is a 2 hour bus ride from Minamisanriku) for a while - enjoying the day and feeling nostalgic about Ireland's last minute draw with Germany in the 2002 World Cup, I started hitching back to Tokyo. Unfortunately I had misjudged where I should hitch from - what looked like an obvious place on the map turned out to be a tunnel.
Anyway, I ended up down the road and around a corner from the entrance to the tunnel and really wasn't feeling very optimistic about getting a lift.
As luck would have it Yuumi sensei - a professional calligrapher - walked past and felt a bit sorry for me I think. While she couldn't offer me a lift, she could offer me a coffee and a bite to eat as we were just outside her studio. Then, as I was going to leave she looked at my sign and offered to make me a new one!
I think that it makes the story better that by the time that I got back on the road after chatting, coffee, mochi and artwork, it was getting a bit late, so I ended up taking the train! I'm not sure if I should take her sign (which asks politely for a lift towards Tokyo) with me when I go hitching next, or if I should frame it.
Only in Japan eh! Thanks Yuumi!
