A journal entry from: July 08 - Jan 09

Ajanta was like yet unlike Ellora. Older caves that had been abandoned for 1000 years until an Englishman wanted to kill a tiger and followed it to this spot. The caves are closer together and not quite so elaborately carved, but some of the paintings inside have survived for 2200 years because the caves are more closed off and they were overgrown, further cutting off the elements.

I spent a great few hours wandering around, climbing the nearby hill to get an overview of the caves. Between Ajanta and Ellora, I would choose to see... both!

On the short bus ride from the visitors' centre to the caves, I saw why so many hawkers are so persistent - a group of older northern English tourists were in the bus and one by one they relented (well a lot of them did), and paid very high prices for souvenirs.
