A journal entry from: July 08 - Jan 09

Spent a day wandering around Thessaloniki - which I always used to spell with an 'a' at the end. It seems that throughout its history Thessaloniki has always come in an honourable second place - whether to Athens, Constantinople or Pella. I bet its football team often comes second too - actually, after checking Wikipedia they have only managed to finish second once in the Greek Super League.

Anyway, I went to a couple of museums, of which the Museum of Acrchaeology was the second best (after the Byzatine Museum) and definitely formed the opinion that Thessaloniki is the second most interesting city that I have been to in Greece.

Don't get me wrong, I had a great time in Thessaloniki, and would definitely recommend a visit (in fact you could say that I enjoyed every second). But it was amazing how often I heard to it referred to as "the second most important," "the second biggest" or even "the first, after the first" (a contemporary account when the 'first' was Constantinople).
