Sydney

A journal entry from: Round the world

If we had to describe Sydney in three words, it would be green, friendly and expensive!!

We started off in an awful hostel called the Asylum (name should have given it away really!) which was just filthy - if you ever go to Sydney, don't stay there!! However, we landed on our feet in the end as my fab friend Jyl emailed us about a friend of hers in Sydney who we ended up spending two days and nights with. Thanks Janine!

Janine had a gorgeous flat right near Bondi beach which was lovely and we had a great night on Friday when we went to a club on Beach Road to listen to a hip-hop duo who were awesome!

The first day we were in Sydney, having arrived at 7am, we walked through Hyde Park and the Botanical Gardens (absolutely beautiful and massive) to see the Opera House and Harbour Bridge. The sun was shining and it was great to actually see the sights that we'd seen so many times on the TV!

On the second day we went and visited the Australian museum which had some great exhibits including a whole array of skeletons and also an exhibition about the indigenous people of Australia which was really interesting.

Then on Saturday it rained (what's that about?!) and we caught a ferry to Manly from Circular Quay. Despite the rain, there were some great views and Manly beach was very nice. We had a great dinner on Saturday: a $5 steak meal (awesome) and a huge piece of chocolate mud cake -  yum... Then we watched a great film called Baraka which everyone should watch if they get the chance - as Janine said, 'it's like a beautiful photo album of the world'.

Now in New Zealand - updates soon! :)

If you think the weather in Sydney was bad, you should see it here! Torrential rain, water all over the roads, blowing a gale .... hope it's not raining in N.Z. Are you going to include Milford Sound and/or Milford track on your itinerary? It's in 'the book'! By the way, the 'blue flower' is an agapanthus and we have one or two in the garden!!! I now need to discover how to get back to the Bali photos and read the captions because they weren't there when I looked at it, woe is me, this IT business is very disheartening! Keep trekking! Love Mum/Julie

Hi chaps...hope you are enjoying yerselves! I was talking to Immi, who, given Australia is on the 'bottom' of the world, wondered how you stopped yourselves 'falling off'. After some thought, her conclusion was that you must be wearing very 'Sticky shoes'... So keep wearing those shoes!
