Day 12: Manila

Written on: Sunday February 4th, 2007

A journal entry from: Philippines

My final day...

We spent the day in Manila, first going to church (it's Sunday, after all), and then heading out to the mall (it's Manila, after all) for a last stop for souvenirs and food at the market (we're Pinay after all!)

Before heading to the mall, we drove around the city to see it during the day, and stopped at the American Cemetary and Memorial. It's kind of strange (terrible? sad?) that there's this huge space as a burial ground for Americans, but...well, you saw the pictures from the cemetary where Filipinos like my grandparents are buried. Coffins on top of coffins on top of coffins.

In the late afternoon, we headed to my cousins' place for a last evening together. We headed to Luneta Park (which is now called Rizal Park) and walked around as it was getting dark. There was a show with various dances in the outdoor amphitheatre there and we watched for a few minutes before walking towards the bay and, towards Baywalk, of course! There we had dinner at the popular, Aristocrat, and again, walked around Baywalk. There was one band doing a cover of John Denver's "Leavin' on a Jet Plane, " which was quite appropriate for me since these were my last few hours in the Philippines!
