lovin' life in El Salvador

A journal entry from: El Salvador, and Costa Rica

Leaving Guatemala in a hurry (well, it took almost 6 hours to get from Xila to the boarder) we arrived after a long days travel to the surf town of La Liberdad, which apparently has the finest surf in El Salvador. Arriving at night was great fun, we found a room quick and woke up the next morning with high expectations. Part way into an exploratory walk on the beach with Eric in the early morn, we were approached by a nice local who was very friendly, after a minute of my broken Spanish he freaked out and tried to rob us with a stick in his shirt. After getting over the fact that he was robbing us, we quickly realized that it was in fact a stick in his shirt, not the gun he spoke of, so after throwing our weight around and a rock fight with him and a friend we got back to the hotel and left a few hours later.

In San Salvador we learned of a chilled out beach town close to the Guatemala boarder called Barra de Santiago. We arrived in the late afternoon, and surfed a very colorful sunset. This place was real. Salt of the Earth locals, an ex Navy Seal and his wife, and Anhel, the ex El Salvadorian surf champ, with a golden heart, and a few beat up surf boards, (one was 25 years old).  Life was easy here. I could have stayed for months and almost did, but we had some friends to meet for Christmas in Costa Rica........
