A journal entry from: Kuala Lumpur
There's a certain irony in my internship project. Basically, as you may know, I am required to draft up a handbook for youth (18-25). The first month of the drafting has taken place internally, which has meant a lot of meetings with my superiors critiquing my work. This involves a lot of much older people telling me what to put in the Youth Handbook and what not to put in the youth handbook.
My number one critique from all my supervisors? "This needs to be more youth-friendly." Youth Friendly. This phrase has lost all meaning to me in the past few weeks from over usage. What does it even mean? "You know, there's such a big gap between younger youth and older youth, the needs are so different." Read between the lines of Malaysian subtlety: this maybe okay for you but you are so much older than the other youth, you may not be in touch with what "YOUTH" need.
Um, I guess not a lot of people critiquing my work know that I'm 20. I realize that I am educated and am anglophone and can convince people that I am wise beyond my years (cough), but these are not just kids that have been picked up off the streets, these are young adults who are educated (otherwise they would not speak English) and that have jobs and are attending university. So we are dealing with a certain intelligence level here.
But, apparently, at the ripe old age of 20, I am out of touch with the needs of youth. Go figure. :P
