A journal entry from: Kuala Lumpur
Just wanted to add some photos of the fruit that I am encountering. I don't know what the small purple fruit is, but it is delicious. The other one is a rambutan that is local, and is kind of like a lychee but less sweet.Yesterday I saw a monkey (!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) trying to get some rambutan from a tree next to my office.
Unfortunately, it is not normal for a monkey to be chillin' in KL. The groundskeeper, Kong, said that he thought he probably escaped from the zoo about 20 minutes away. But, I mean, it's Malaysia, so I don't see why the monkeys wouldn't hang out in the city from time to time.
Anyway, I got this fruit at a night market at a place called Kampung Baru which is not so far away from the Petronas towers and is like a traditional malay area. Definitely everyone at this night market was Malay. I got a lot of "wtf are you doing here, whitey, this ain't no tourist resort" looks from the locals, and a lot of "hellos" and over-friendly smiles from the young malay men. Two girls actually gave me the most intense stank eye I think I have ever gotten, I wanted to congradulate them, but, alas, I don't think anyone there spoke English. I got a chance to use my malay, "berapu harga?" I asked sheepishly and the woman pulled out 15 ringgits to show me how much. I bought the dress, and then got some noodles (no idea what was in them) that were delicious for like 2 ringit (=like 60 cents)
I am also mourning Michael Jackson's death by listening to "Don't stop till you get enough" over and over again. I highly recommend it.

lol at the video mom. I actually don't mind the smell, but the taste is a lot worse.

dude, jackfruit is the most disgusting thing i have tasted. i have had durian in canada, i could tolerate it, but here in vietnam it stinks 304902 times worse and is way grosser and kind of spicy. i hope you will travel around malaysia. they have SO MUCH AWESOME wildlife and national park! i thought about going (i even went as far as making a mini-guide of islands to visit), but i would spend way too much time there - time that i do not have :( still, malaysia = top destination pour moi. and if you want to visit ho chi minh city for a few days or whatever, just let me know because i am totally cool with YIIP-ers staying with me. there are lots of cheap flights (jetstar and airasia). southeast asia connection! vietpea.wordpress.com

I LOVE that your mom found the durian fruit video. Apparently there are signs in different parts of the world that forbid one from eating durian in certain areas. I think this should be suggested to mythbusters.
