A journal entry from: Kuala Lumpur
One of the most distinctive qualities of being in Malaysia during the rainy season is the predictability of the rains. Every single day, at 4:45, too early to try to sneak out of the office preemptively, it starts to rain. Just now, at 4:55 the rain picked up, and a full on storm, with the loudest thunder I think I've ever heard, is raging outside and the exact moment that everyone in the city is ending their work day, and has to venture outside.
Perhaps this is one of the reasons why most people in KL own a car, and why it is the main way to get around. Jaya once said to me, "They are the kings of the road, and us pedestrians are the poor oppressed population trying to make it by." This is felt more than ever when leaving the office, when, by word of mouth and networking, you might happen to make it into the car of the one of the 'kings.' I was not so lucky, and am sitting at my desk seeking refuge until at least the lightening and wind lets up.
