A journal entry from: Kuala Lumpur

The misadventures of Clara in KL continue....

I managed to make rice last night with my electric burner. The manual is really hard to understand because its all in Engrish but basically there is no mechanism for different heats, so it'll just turn on and stay on and then turn off for a few seconds and the length of time it stays on depends on how hot it is supposed to be. In short, it takes FOREVER to cook anything, but it could burn really really easily. So rice was a great accomplishment.

I also, after calling Celecom 3 times and visiting their office twice, found out that the person I bought my modem from gave me the wrong sim card, so I will have to go buy a "starter kit" with a new sim card to put into my modem and put down a 500 ringgit deposit on my account before I can start using it (its about 68 ringgits a month, they say). They have a big problem (apparently) with foreigners coming in and then just peacing without paying, so with this I will have 1500 ringits tied up in deposits which is not so bad, it just makes calculating my finances a little tricker (and lord knows I have enough trouble with that already).

I spent an outrageous amount of money (17 ringits = around $5) on organic instant oatmeal that I had for breakfast. (worth it).

I'm going to Meleka tomorrow with Maureen, her roommate and her roommate's husband. My guide book says that you can "catch a glimpse of the soul of the country" in this town. SO, I guess I'll have to figure out what exactly that means while I'm there.

I've added some pictures in response to Greg's request.

"Tupac, Me & My Girlfriend" lol. Hilarious. You and your burner must be real close. lol. The place really does look beautiful. I hope you're able to tell us what that whole "soul of the country" thing means. Have a good one homes.
