A journal entry from: Japan Blitz
Ueno/Ochanomizu area was a lot more packed than Asakusa. More ppl walking around. Based on a few maps we made it to Hotel Edoya except we were too early for 1pm checkin so we left our luggage there, quickly checked email then walked down to Ameyoko Markets for some bargain shopping. So many shoe stores!!! It matches some of the streets in hk. Full of sneakers - some nike styles not available in Australia! We discovered some turks in the middle of the market selling kebabs... hahaha we found it funny so we took a photo with them. The shops eventually got too repetitive and we went to the next market next door which was more food oriented. Lots of seafood, big salmon heads for sale etc. Too hungry so bought an octopus ball (big version of takioyaki but with stuffing in it). i forgot what its called but it was nice. Had sweet sauce and mayo over it. The insides were mash and mixed with other meat and veges.
Walked past a dodgy pharmacy but we didn't see any drugs. Laughed at some goods we thought would have been good for James lol.... then starting to get hungry again so we went downstairs to food section of Matzukaya department store and oh boy the food there is so nice!!! Its like the eatery section of DJs in Sydney. They had sushi packed into nice little cardboard boxes. Sweets were nicely presented and bread top looking thing was also in there. We enjoyed the time there browsing the different foods available ... that made us full already hahah.. and equip with free taste testing sugoi!!! Some dude gave us noodles, we said we didnt speak japanese ... had a funny little non-understandble convo with him. Got some more freebies chicken etc..... little heaven there. The food court on the top was shockingly expensive so stuff that!
Bought snacks and went back to Hotel Edoya. We got our room. 4 person in a room japanese ryokan how nice! its small but it was clean and intimate haha... got yutakas which we never used. After check-in, we walked out again. This time to Akihabara (Electric City) which was seriously electrical stores everywhere! Electricals were cheap. Cameras were cheap but they would be in Jap version and we can't read jap so no use buying it. Around that area, there were many amusement centres and anime stores. If ur a big manga/anime fan, this is the place to go. There's porn manga!!! Shocking!
We walked to some nice building behind the main shopping strip. Walked into this poshy pharmacy which was japan's version of harrisons. We saw the dispensary which was in a separate room with a glass window. We noticed the meds were not in their boxes. So there were these strips of meds lined up on the shelves. They had what looked like a good counseling table/section that they talk to the patient when they come to get their meds. Shouldve seen a doctor and got a script while in Japan - it wouldve been a good experience! But english arghh so hard to find!
