Koh Samui

A journal entry from: South East Asia 2005

From Ao Nang and Krabi, we made our way by bus across the mainland, back up through Surat Thani to Don Sak and caught the ferry to Koh Samui. I hadn't been to Koh Samui yet and I don't remember why we came over to this side again... I'm pretty sure we were supposed to meet some people but we never did. Anyways, Sarah and I stayed here for about a week.

We stayed on Lamai beach which is about 20 mins from the main beach Cheweng. It is a lot less crowded but still VERY touristy and kinda lame, but ok. Koh Samui is probably the tamest of the Gulf islands and a popular spot for foreign families. Sarah and I had a pretty good time though. We just hung out on the beach and scootered around finding little beaches. Made some trips up to the sights on Samui, including the Big Buddha, which was very cool. We made some friends, most notably this crazy, dirty, abnoxious English guy who we called Daffy (after the crazy dude in The Beach movie). Well, he wasn't really a friend, more like entertainment. He yelled a lot, and we would keep our distance.

We visited the butterfly gardens which were actually awesome, and drank this bee honey juice. The Samui aquarium and Tiger Zoo which was a huge ripoff and every depressing... poor tigers and fishes. Sarah saw one of the tiger handlers punch a tiger cub in the head and it pretty much ruined the day. There is also the Grandmother and Grandfather rocks which look amazing like a penis and vagina, not so subtle mind tricks on those.

After we stayed for 5 or 6 days and didn't meet who we were (or were not) supposed to meet. Sarah was going to meet a friend in Bangkok and through email, I had arranged to meet Drew and Simon (who we parted ways with almost a month ago) and head off to Cambodia. We took the train back up from Surat Thani to Bangkok.
