In El Salvador

From the Trip: Guatemala Study Abroad 2009

From: Auntie Deranged ;o)

(March 21st, 2009)

I'm finally back home with my own computer & was able to see all the journals you posted so far. Your phot6ography is AWESOME, & the sights blew me away, especially the churches, colonial buildings & ruins. WOW. I would LOVE Antigua. Do you know someone who will rent me a wintering apartment there?? ;o) Anyway, good job!!!

re the bed sheet thing. Know what works even better? an old bed sheet folded in half with a zipper added on 2 sides to make it a light sleeping bag. that way you don't need 2 sheets ;o( I sew an old pillow case on the bottom half so I can slip a pillow in there. Some pillows you get aren't that clean ;o( I have also used a sarong as a top sheet in an emergency ;o)

oops, meant to add something about ATMs.... Instead of ordering local money here (good luck with that.....), go to an ATM at the airport when you arrive & get some there... Depending on where you are, they may even have ATMs? You'd be surprised where they have them these days. Even Vietnam had lots. I travel with a small reserve of US dollars for emergencies & my ATM card. I don't use travelers' checks any more, have not for a long time. They demand too much ID, esp your passport, for them now, almost like a personal check ;o(

Sewing kit (stealing one from a hotel is usually easiest) matches or lighter (i don't smoke, yet always find a use for fire while traveling) a little first aid kit with tensor bandage(band-aids can be hard to find when your finger is bleeding) Personal alarm clock (you don't want to miss those scheduled breakfast) and leaving your tax information with some so they may submit it for you, unless you want to try and do it from Guatemala That's all I could think of for now... hope some of that is useful

Hmm...Tylenol or Asprins and vitamins? PMS medication? Any sort of gum or snacks you may crave (granola bars or whichever?)...batteries... Oh yeah-if you bring your ipod (if you have one?) don't forget to charge it before you leave and bring a charger (I forgot when we went to Barbados! Went to listen to my vacay playlist on the plane and it was DEAD and had no way to charge it! Typical...) Have a merry Christmas!

Hell, 1.5 hours hours should be enough if your flight isn't late? That's within the acceptable limits.

Actually, I am freaking out a bit because someone just told me a similar story about a girl getting taken out a cab in Guatemala and getting beat up, them taking her bank card and forcing her to give her pin #, then getting beat up again. You're almost home ... stay safe! :(
