Election Day in Nepal

Written on: Thursday April 10th, 2008

A journal entry from: Asia

Nepali election day has come and gone, and guess what, NOTHING HAPPENED. Maybe it was because ancient figures like Jimmy Carter arrived, but there was no sporatic gunfire, bombs, unrest, wicked explosions, or anything. I guess this is a good thing I mean I don't want to end up dead, but when something gets built up it is anti-climatic when nothing unfolds. When I awoke I thought that there was a melee in full swing out front of my guesthouse. I went to see what was going on and realized it was only a cricket game. I don't think that your ever really want to get caught up in an open civil war, but perhaps because of what you see in movies, it all looks quite exciting. Perhaps the fireworks will happen over the next few weeks as the results are revealed.

I rented a bike and rode around to catch the action. It was wonderful as transit was shutdown all day and there were no cars on the road, aside from the occasional pick up full of friendly Nepali soldiers, or the SUVs carrying election observers at high speed. I couldn't even find a poll booth, was anyone even voting. All I saw was people having a good time and walking around. So I returned to the lakeside and had a cold beer. Honestly, I hope that this poll will give Nepal the stability its people deserve. Only time will tell, but after a conversation with a friendly restaurant owner the other night I am not so sure. He thinks that Nepal lacks cohesion, there are too many different groups that want different things and don't hold any feeling of fraternity to other communities. He is convinced that India and China want to split Nepal. He thought that either nothing will happen or that there would be open war. This hasn't happened yet and in all honesty lets hope it doesn't.
