King Kong of Hong Kong

Written on: Monday October 15th, 2007

A journal entry from: Asia

I am in Hong Kong and this place is nuts. The first thing that strikes you is the immensity of the skyline. The best way I can describe it is a mix of the cities in Blade Runner and Judge Dread, but with fewer flying motor bikes and cyborgs, and more crazy cabbies and Indians trying to sell you suits. One thing that has sparked my interest is the weakness Hong Kongers have for wearing shirts with english phrases that make no sense whatsoever. You might have thought that being a colony of Britain for two centuries would have cleared any confusion up, but I am glad it didn't because it is more hilarious for me. So I have taken it upon myself to document this phenomenon and as your correspondent I have included a couple of photos for your enjoyment.

Other than t-shirt research, I have been visiting the sights. The other night I hit up the Temple Street Night Market, one of Hong Kong's most famous. While eating a meal at a street stall, ordered with much confusion and pointing, I befriended two very jolly and drunken Taiwanese businessmen, Chai and Nu. They were in Hong Kong for an electronics expo or something, but I never really figured out their deal. They were very friendly, and I don't know if their demeanour is typical of all Taiwanese businessmen but they seemed intent on drinking me under the table. The night took a decidely "Asian Glow" as soon a cadre of Korean CEOs joined our motley crew in consuming an ocean of Tsingtao and a loud regailing of stories many of which I never did grasp.
