To the Students of Redfish Elementary: As we travel through these countries of northern South-East Asia and observe the children here, I am reminded of you and hope you all had a great Spring Break.

Children here go to school in uniforms from 8 to 11:30 am, and then take a 2 hour break and come back until 4 pm. Schools are poor in the villages and many of the ethnic girls decide not to attend school so they can sell things in the town markets to help their families. Children here work hard and play hard. Often you will see young girls carrying their siblings on their back, cooking with their mothers, carrying firewood, and working in the rice fields. The boys also find their way in the working world, but tend to stay more in the village and go to school.

All children, I have found, want the same things: to have family, love, warmth, food, laughter, and play. Sometimes the children here don't get those important needs. Children in Canada are so blessed.
