Vang Vieng, Laos

A journal entry from: South-East Asia, 2007

In the middle of most chilled out, beautiful Laos, lies this crazy party town on the NamSong river -full of young tourists and the resultant bars, restaurants, guest houses, riverside pubs with rope-swings and zip-lines, you name it. It is incredibly beautiful, in the lush valley surrounded by limestone karst mountains jutting up from the rice paddies. It is an area abundant in action-sports -river rafting, kayaking, or just plain tubing, rock climbing, mountain biking, eco-trekking tours. What fun.  But what a contrast between the pastoral Lao lifestyle and the influx of Western party and action tourists.

We stayed in a simple little guesthouse with thatched walls and an outdoor shower/bathroom, with a great deck-restaurant overlooking the river and offering the best sunset views in town.  We tubed the river, bicycled a 35km loop on rocky backroads through karst mountains and traditional villages, hiked to some amazing caves in the limestone karsts, and of course sipped BeerLao on the deck at the end of the day.

It was an enjoyable, action-packed time in laid-back, lovely Laos.
