Vang Vieng, Laos

A journal entry from: Southeast Asian Adventures!

It was a 3 hour bus ride to Vang Vieng, Laos. Vang Vieng is known as a party town and is famous for tubing down the Nam Song River with riverside bars along the way. On the way to Vang Vieng I became friends with Pippa, Negar and Zoya, 3 English girls who I ended up spending all of my time with in Laos.

When we arrived in Vang Vieng, we discovered that tubing was closed as a drunk tourist recently drowned on the river. Instead, the 4 of us booked a kayaking tour down the Nam Song, which was a lot of fun. It was an all day affair, kayaking down the rushing river and over small rapids with a few stops to swing off ropes into the water. We also stopped at 2 caves, the Elephant cave and Sleeping Cave. Sleeping Cave was my favourite - we had to swim in icy water into the cave holding candles. When swam in about 150m or so, then blew out our candles and sat in the complete darkness. After relighting the candles, we floated out on our backs, admiring the amazing formations inside the cave.

Other than that, our time in Vang Vieng was very laid back. We spent way too much time watching Family Guy, and decided to continue north to Luang Prabang.
