Diving Sipadan, Sabah, Borneo

Written on: Wednesday June 11th, 2008

A journal entry from: Southeast Asian Adventures!

I arranged to stay on the tiny island of Mabul near Semporna, Borneo, with Billabong Scuba, a budget dive operator that makes daily trips to Pulau Sipadan and to dive sites around Mabul.

My 3 days of diving quickly turned into one week, and still it was hard to leave Mabul. I met up with some friends I had met in KK at Billabong, and also became fast friends with Johnny, Raze and Eddi (my dive masters).

My days were full of diving Sipadan and Mabul. Sipadan is one of the world's top dive sites, and it was easy to see why: huge schools of barracuda, white tip sharks, hawksbill turtles, moray eels, beautiful coral, turtle tomb cave, rare nudibranchs, seahorses and tornadoes of jackfish.... I have never seen anything like it! In the morning we would take the boat out of Sipadan and dive the famous coral wall for an hour, come up for a snack on the beach, then go back down for another hour. We would head back to Billabong (located on Mabul) for the usual lunch of fish, rice, chicken and veggies, then dive Mabul in the afternoon.

While the days were full of diving, the nights were spent at Uncle Chang's, a neighbouring resort (they served beer), playing cards, and star gazing on the jetty while the dive masters would play guitar and deal out stiff Filipino rum and coke.

I love Mabul and Sipadan so much that I think I'll be coming back here...

Hi , I will go to Mabil in April 2009 and i want to stay to the billabong longhouse to dive. I have seen that you stay to this longhouse in your picture so I would like to have your feedback about it. Is it confortable? The food? The diving club? ?. I hesitate with uncle chang longhouse. Is there beer on each longhouse? Kind regard Luc.gillot@free.fr
