Sihanoukville

A journal entry from: Southeast Asian Adventures!

Just a quick ride from Kampot and we arrived in beachy Sihanoukville. There are a lot more tourists in Sihanoukville than in other parts of Cambodia (besides Siem Reap, of course), and it has the atmosphere of the Thai islands. I spent a lot of time on the beach in Sihanoukville while Alan got his diving certification. I enjoyed lying in the sun, swimming in the warm ocean and watching the women walk by with baskets of fruit and crabs balanced on their heads.

I also did 2 fun dives near the small island of Koh Rong Samloem. The conditions weren't great, as it was the day after a big rain storm. The current was strong the visibility was very poor, so our group of 5 divers was separated more than once. There also wasn't a whole lot to see due to the practice of dynamite fishing and illegal fishing in the area. The highlights include a tiny seahorse, a small octopus and a huge purple eel.

We spent our evenings on the beach eating $3 seafood BBQs of fresh squid, barracuda, and prawns. The nightlife in Sihanoukville is much more lively than elsewhere in Cambodia, and we had a few fun nights out.
