Lamongan

A journal entry from: Indonesia Summer 2006

The school vice-principal (who is also acting as my mom) Ira, took Tari and I to Lamongan with her 2 kids and husband. I was excited, looking forward to seeing different parts of Indo. The drive to Lamongan was about 2 hrs or so, and bloody hot, as the air conditioning in the truck was broken. We passed a lot of fish farms, rice fields, tiny shacks, and a little fishing village with bright boats.

When we got to Lamongan, the plan was to go to an amusement park. The park was WEIRD. The first thing we saw were tiny little rooms, each one with a different cat in them.... hundreds of cats!!! And there are stray cats everywhere in Surabaya! Tari and I were laughing pretty hard at that. The day consisted of going on sketchy rides, entertaining Ira's kids, going to a cave, a traditional boat ride, trying traditional Indonesia beer (I can't remember which fruit it's made out of... tastes.... interesting), and almost dying of heat exhaustion. I was also an attraction for the local people. I guess they don't see foreigners often, and I had a line of people waiting to get their picture taken with me. Tari and I almost died laughing. I'm getting very used to being stared at, pointed at, getting my picture taken randomly, and getting yelled at in Indonesian.

On the way back from Lamongan, we stopped in the fishing village to eat dinner. It was nice to watch the sun set by the water and the boats. The little beach was pretty smelly though.

All in all, a good day in Lamongan.
