Life on the farm!

Written on: Tuesday April 29th, 2008

Warning! this blog contains no travelling or motorbikes.
I live on a farm. OK its a hostel, an eco hostel.. and they have fields, and horses and geese and stuff. Each day, five and a half days a week I throw or spread a mix of sand, clay & hay onto the walls. This is what Im up to as I await the delivery of my new documents and film for the super8 camera I bought.
I get free food and board for my work and Im learning loads of Spanish here. Past tense, future tense and so on... I mainly work with Aswaldo and Leo and the dont have alot of English so I am learning from them. The other people like myself working here in one capacity or another are also learning spanish so they have lots of material and books to work from. There is another Wwoofer called Emma from Scotland and Van from Boston who is on a programme teaching local kids soccer and Jack from England who is on some sort of Horse care programme, where he takes care of horses. Obviously.
I have TV ... and I get to watch BBC world news in the morning before I go to work. I have also seen a few movies. One worth mention is Gladiator, no not the one everyone knows but an absolute gem from 1992.
A story of two teenagers trapped in the world of illegal underground boxing. One is fighting to save his fathers life and using the money pay off gambling debts accumulated by his father. The second is fighting for the money to get out of the ghettos.
I loved it, it was great, good guy beats up bad guy.etc etc. It even has a training montage! MONTAGE
WOW... Anyway it was great, but be aware in no way am I advising anyone to watch it cos it really is pure tripe. But I of course I loved it  ; http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0104346/
NEWS JUST IN: I drink "Mate" now, kinda like a herbal tea everybody here drinks it, it is kind of bitter, some have it with a bit of sugar.. 6months of trying it just to be polite finally ended with me buying my own cup and now we have it at work every day for 11´s.
Aswaldo is a great guy I work with, a real happy hippy type of guy, smiling all the time. We were drinking Mate during a break from work today and it tasted different because he had added bits of another plant to it, It happened to be one of the weeds at our feet, there growing amongst the rubble on the building site. It looked like nothing special but he knew that it tasted good and was good for you. He went on to point out other scrub like weeds and saying that is good for this, that is good for that. Medicine man. Great guy.
BEER PONG  !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Do you know beer pong? (If so why didnt yo tell me about it)
I didnt know about it till last night, It is great fun.
OK so, Get 20 plastic pint cups and put 10 in a triangle at each end of your ping pong table.
We didnt have one , no importante!, just used normal tables. You fill all the cups with some beer and shoot to try and get the pingpong ball in the opponents cup. You get it in, they have to drink it.
Simple, and fun for all the kids.
Hmmmm, Id say the guy in the An Post postal service customer care line might enjoy it ; )
Go on have a go! Thanks Mr customer care person who I dont know the name of for helping Linden with his postal query re. my package of parts that has safely arrived! I hope u enjoy the blog.
Again. It is great fun. BUT.... if you have decided to drink a good few glasses of cheap rum and coke and then start to play this game then you might end up in an office later on that night being talked to by two serious looking army guys! That as the say is another story altogether. And ...well, one im not really too sure about myself.
Meanwhile somewhere north of Mendoza Peadar is on his way to Sucre, Bolivia to study spanish for a month, I will catch up with him there later.
OK, Im off to play more beer pong.
