Punta Arenas

A journal entry from: South America

December 7th - 9th

We said our good-byes to Jean at the airport - she said she felt like she wanted to come with us but was happy not to be about to spend a week camping and hiking around the Paine!

On the flight we had some spectacular views over the Andes and saw the Torres del Paine. The flight lasted about 3 hours and we enjoyed the mandatory box of biscuits. When we arrived we were met by Libbet (Elizabeth) at the airport. It was just a 10 minute drive back to her house, which has a fantastic position overlooking the Magellan Strait.

Libbet is Jean´s cousin, Buffy´s daughter. She lives just outside Punta Arenas with her husband Gaston and their dog Alaska. They have three daughters all studying in Santiago. We had a very warm welcome with tea, toast and lovely home made cake. During our stay we enjoyed several fantastic meals that Libbet prepared, more cakes, and many pisco sours.

After a short rest some of the team ventured out to get supplies for the Paine trek, and arrange the bus for the 9th when we would be off to the Torres. Some of the team (....?) slept for several hours after the early start!

The next day we had a rest day so Ronan and Andy decided that it would be a good idea to go swimming, just to be able to say that they had been in the Magellan Strait. The water was extremely cold and nearly made Andy cry....

That evening we packed our kit up, leaving behind anything unnecessary. Team briefing was held after dinner, our leader Barrie outlining what we needed to accomplish each day showing us the route on the map. Ronan had brought Yorkshire tea from England which he claimed would be good for morale. After that we had a few drinks and played some cards and went to bed in order to be ready for our departure the next morning.

It was great to get to know Libbet and Gaston and we were already looking forward to coming back after the Paine!

Hi Ronan, yes very impressed that you managed to add a comment! Hope you managed to adapt back to work after Christmas. We´ll be in the jungle tomorrow so it will be hot, 30 degrees we think. Have a look at the rest of the blog - we´ll finish the Paine in a few days time. Love from us
