Hummingbird Highway - Macaroni View Hotel

A journal entry from: Cycle Mexico - Panama

July 19th - 20th

On the afternoon of the 19th we started cycling on the Hummingbird Highway. After 18km we reached the Macaroni View Hotel, where we had planned to spend the night. It was so called as on one side of the Highway was the Macaroni Mountain (and on the other side the Maya Mountains). However there were 33 American missionaries already staying there and it was full. Fortunately we could camp in the garden, as there was nowhere else nearby.

The first thing the missionaries asked us was if we were married - I replied "not yet" and they sympathised, "oh, that's ok" !! This reminded us about the view commonly held in Mexico, where we were often asked if we were on our honeymoon. Often when we met people it seemed easier and more acceptable to say that we were married. In Cancun, before we realised this one of the staff said to us "we know that you are not married, but thats ok with us here". It seemed like it was taboo, to be staying together and not be married. However in Belize the situation seems very different. We met lots of people with many children from different partners, and marriage does not seem quite as important.

On the route to the hotel we saw a strange bird with a huge beak sitting on the wire - it was a toucan! It is the national bird of Belize and it was the first we had seen. In the hotel garden they had some toucans nesting in one of the trees.

It was a nice place to stay as the owners prepared a meal for us and served it on the rooftop, by candlelight which was very romantic (even though we were camping in sin).
