Please avoid drinking water in town, it may not agree with you and a diarrhea would be hard to get rid of. If I were you I would boil lots of water and keep it in the room covered and when you go out can put some in a bottle to take with you. Also you can wash your teeth with it. I can relate to the experience you had with your parents reservations about your trip. I guess our parents are so used to protecting us and trying to push us forward that they forget how important it is for us to create our own experiences.
