Travel Blog Part 3 - Caen

Written on: Thursday February 15th, 2007

A journal entry from: EURO5

Perhaps the most sentimental time of our trip came when we made the decision to visit Caen. We had trouble saying "Caen", and learned that pronouncing it "Can" is actually the way they pronounce "Cannes" - the place where the film festival is. In case you're interested, its pronounced "Cah", if that makes any sense. But anyway,  being Canadian I found that there is a World War II  area located near Caen, at the DDay landing beaches, devoted entirely to the Canadian war effort. I had this feeling that I wanted to see what we fought for and kind of take it all in, sort of a way to pay hommage to the sacrifices made by walking in their very footsteps.

Right near the beach is this crazy, shell-shaped steel building that houses all sorts of WWII Canadian memorobilia, and it was just the weirdest thing walking along a beach on the north of France and entering an area that is almost solely dedicated to Canada. They even have the maple leaf flying high, right there. Highly recommended.
